Context
A set of visual experiments developed through the ELVTR AI-Aided Graphic Design programme, covering art-history appropriation, visual perception and advertising-oriented work.
Question / Challenge
Where do generative image tools support visual intent, and where do they quietly overwrite it?
My role
Concept, art direction, image generation, selection and layout.
Process
- Set a visual brief and constraints before opening any tool.
- Generate against the brief and record deviations rather than discarding them.
- Select, retouch and compose the final layouts by hand.
AI contribution
Generation of image variants and rapid exploration of compositional directions.
Human judgement
Briefs, typographic decisions, final selection and layout. Output that resolved into generic advertising style was rejected.
- Brief and constraints
- Art direction
- Typography
- Selection
- Editing and layout
- Generation
- Variation
- Compositional drafting
Output
A selected set of experiments including M.C. Escher-inspired London Underground campaign concepts — self-initiated study work, not commissioned — alongside other investigations of AI image-making.
AI disclosure
- To explore a wide compositional range quickly within a fixed brief.
- Art-historical references were checked; appropriated sources are named rather than absorbed.
- Typography, geometric consistency in Escher-derived structures, and repeated drift toward generic stock aesthetics.
- Most generated typography was replaced by hand; compositions that lost the geometric premise were discarded.
- Brief, direction, selection, typesetting and final composition.
- Study work only — no commissioning body is claimed or implied. Appropriated art-historical references are credited.

Reflection
Tools converge on the average unless the brief is unusually specific; the constraint work matters more than the prompt.
